A Comprehensive Guidebook to Cultural, Artistic, Historic and Natural History Collections in the Badger State
Anton Rajer
Foreword by Senator Russ Feingold
"I hope this book will encourage more people to explore all that Wisconsin has to offer, and, in turn, to strengthen the cultural resources that make Wisconsin such a wonderful place to visit, and an even better place to live."
—U.S. Senator Russ FeingoldThis fascinating, well-researched guidebook describes for the first time in print the full gamut of museums, zoos, and botanical gardens in Wisconsin and the broad spectrum of cultural artifacts and natural history collections in the state. It invites everyone to enjoy a rich variety of sites, from the famous Milwaukee Art Museum to the smallest local historical society. The book:
- includes more than 400 art museums, historical museums and societies, zoos and nature centers, botanical gardens, house museums and historic buildings, heritage farms, spiritual sites, sculpture parks, halls of fame, and other unique sites
- is organized in four geographic regions, with maps indicating cities where sites are found
- offers for each site the street address, contact numbers, hours of operation, admission fees, collection highlights, and a witty, informative description
- includes several indexes to help visitors find their own areas of interest.
Museums, zoos or botanical gardens are found throughout Wisconsin, in almost every county. These are assets of cultural and natural history preserved for the public's educational and recreational use. With such a variety of places to visit, travelers can easily plan destinations for an extended vacation or short one-day trips.
Anton (Tony) Rajer (1952–2011) was an art conservator, a continuing education teacher at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and an author. He had a long and distinguished career, which included, among many other accomplishments, a certificate in French studies at the University of Paris-Sorbonne, and a certificate in conservation from Harvard. He spoke five languages fluently and worked on art conservation projects internationally. The University of Wisconsin Press distributed three of his books, Public Sculpture in Wisconsin: An Atlas of Outdoor Monuments, Memorials, and Masterpieces in the Badger State, of which he was co-author, Museums, Zoos and Botanical Gardens of Wisconsin, and Paris en Panamá / Paris in Panama, an account of his restoration of a significant opera house in Panama. Rajer also volunteered at Ground Zero after the 9/11 attacks, working with the Red Cross and FEMA.
