Madison
A History of the Formative Years
Second Edition
David V. Mollenhoff

The definitive history of Wisconsin's capital city

Madison is richly detailed, fully documented, inclusive in coverage, and delightfully readable. More than 300 illustrations provide a vivid feeling of life in Madison during the formative years. David Mollenhoff's unique interpretive framework, emphasizing public policies and community values, reveals major themes that flow through time, allowing readers to see the city's growth and development with unusual clarity and coherence.

When Mollenhoff began to study Madison's history, he found no one had written a book-length history of Madison since 1876. He read five miles of microfilm, piles of theses, dissertations, reports, manuscripts and letters, and studied thousands of photographs. Readers declared the first edition, published in 1982, to be a classic. For this second edition Madison has been extensively revised and updated with new maps and photos.

"Out of print for a decade, Mollenhoff's Madison history is back on sale today in a glossy, updated new edition. . . . Mollenhoff's incredible research has made the book a valuable tool for teachers, journalists and other researchers, but it is clearly his storytelling skills that set the book apart." —Capital Times, 11/29/03

David V. Mollenhoff has had careers in educational administration, television, management consulting, state government, real estate, downtown development, and affordable housing during his nearly forty years in Madison. He has been active in civic affairs and has served on the City of Madison Landmarks Commission. He is the coauthor, with Mary Jane Hamilton, of Frank Lloyd Wright's Monona Terrace: The Enduring Power of a Civic Vision, also published by the University of Wisconsin Press.
