Africa and the West
Intellectual Responses to European Culture
Edited by Philip D. Curtin
"A significant contribution to the study of the Western impact on Africans. Its major strength lies in the fact that it has provided students and scholars of African affairs with another method of approaching Africa's contact with the West." —Perspective"In this collection the various authors, a well-balanced group of anthropologists and historians, deal with examples of African reactions to Europeans at different times during the last 100 years, drawing their examples from peoples and individuals in Gabon, Zaire, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and Senegal . . . should prove exciting reading to all those interested in the enduring pattern of contacts between Africans and Europeans."—History: Reviews of New Books
"This book offers some exciting examples of the insights to be gained from studies of the intellectual responses of Africans to the West. In six case studies, anthropologists, historians, and a literary critic study the impact of the West on African patterns of thought."—Library Journal
"This collection of essays is of consistently high quality while considering a variety of 'intellectual responses' to alien culture ranging from the religious and popular cultural responses of tribal peoples to the poetic reactions of a leading African intellectual."
