For You, Lili Marlene
A Memoir of World War II
Robert Peters
"Perhaps nearer the experience of thousands of GIs than the tales of drama and trauma."
Noel Annan, New York Review of Books"In this touching sequel to Crunching Gravel: A Wisconsin Boyhood, [Robert Peters] recalls his search for self-knowledge and sexual identity as a young draftee in WW II.... This elegantly written memoir has much to say about the relationship between sex and the military life." Publishers Weekly
"Peters is neither sentimental nor mawkish in his coming-of-age story, which is made complicated by his ambivalence over his strong homosexual feelings. It is a rare adult who can convey the anxieties of youth as vividly as Peters does."David Azzolina, Library Journal
"Peters' frank confessions and lush recollections paint a bittersweet portrait of a type of wartime experience that has seldom been explored."Kurt Chandler, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
